Pune: A highly educated young woman studying for the MPSC exams turned to theft after becoming addicted to the stock market and online gaming. In a shocking incident, she drugged her close friend by lacing cold coffee with sedatives and stole her gold jewelry worth over ₹5.46 lakh.
A 31-year-old woman filed a complaint at the Bharati Vidyapeeth Police Station, following which police arrested her 25-year-old friend from Ambegaon Pathar. The court has remanded the accused to police custody till April 6. The incident took place around 4 PM on March 6 at the complainant’s residence in Ambegaon.
According to police, the complainant and the accused were friends for several years. The accused hails from Latur, while the complainant is a native of Pune. They had first met while staying in a rented room in Sadashiv Peth during their preparation days before marriage—one pursuing a course and the other preparing for competitive exams. After marriage, they continued to visit each other frequently at their respective residences in Ambegaon Budruk and Ambegaon Pathar.
On March 6, the accused visited the complainant’s house with cold coffee. After drinking it, the complainant fell unconscious. Seizing the opportunity, the accused allegedly stole jewelry worth ₹5.46 lakh from the cupboard.
When the complainant noticed the jewelry missing two days later, she approached the police, leading to a detailed investigation and subsequent arrest of her friend.
