Pune: With temperatures soaring across Maharashtra and electricity usage hitting seasonal highs, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) is encouraging residents to adopt simple yet impactful energy-saving habits. In a recent public advisory, MSEDCL’s Public Relations Officer, Nishikant Raut, highlighted practical ways households can lower their power consumption—and their electricity bills.

Air conditioners, refrigerators, geysers, washing machines, and microwaves are among the leading contributors to high energy bills during the hot season. Of these, air conditioners are particularly energy-intensive, using up to nine times more electricity than ceiling fans. To cut down usage, residents are advised to limit AC operation, clean filters regularly, and ensure that doors and windows remain shut while the AC is running. Once the room is sufficiently cool, switching to a ceiling fan is a good alternative.

Refrigerators are another major energy drain, accounting for up to 30% of household electricity use each year. MSEDCL recommends retrieving all items in one go to avoid frequent door openings, which can cause energy spikes.

Replacing traditional bulbs with LED lighting is a smart move, as LEDs consume up to 80% less energy and last much longer. Even replacing small zero-watt bulbs in bedrooms and bathrooms with low-wattage LEDs (1–3 watts) can lead to notable savings.

Another common source of hidden power consumption is electronics on standby. Devices like televisions, computers, and mobile chargers continue to draw power even when turned off. Unplugging them when not in use helps eliminate this phantom energy usage.

MSEDCL also urges residents to make the most of natural light during the day. Choosing light-coloured curtains and walls can enhance brightness without relying on artificial lighting. Additionally, switching off fans and appliances when not in use remains one of the most effective habits for reducing electricity consumption.

For those looking to reduce dependency on the grid and save in the long run, the PM Suryaghar Scheme offers an attractive option. Homeowners can install rooftop solar panels and avail themselves of central government subsidies of up to ₹78,000 for systems ranging from 1 kW to 3 kW. Not only does this reduce electricity bills significantly, but it also transforms consumers into energy producers.

By adopting these simple practices, citizens can not only beat the heat but also make a meaningful impact on their power bills and the environment.
