Pune: Following a week of intense downpours, rainfall activity has significantly decreased across Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that most parts of the state will now experience only light showers, with dry conditions expected to persist over the next several days. This weather shift may impact the commencement of the Kharif sowing season, particularly in regions where earlier rains had flooded farmlands.

The recent spell of heavy rain, attributed to a low-pressure system, has now subsided. According to the IMD, rainfall between June 6 and 10 will remain close to average, but the following 10 to 15 days are likely to remain largely dry. Additionally, a drop in wind speeds indicates reduced chances of further significant rain during this period.

Farming Activities Affected by Waterlogging

In May, rainfall in several districts was nearly ten times higher than normal, leading to widespread waterlogging. This has delayed essential pre-sowing preparations. Farmers are currently waiting for “vafsa”—a crucial soil moisture balance—especially in areas with deep black soil, where it typically takes 10 to 15 days to develop after excess rain. Any unseasonal showers during this period could further postpone the sowing process.

The IMD has advised farmers to closely follow localised forecasts to make informed decisions about fieldwork and crop planning.

Konkan Sees Drop in Rainfall Too
The Konkan region, which had seen rapid monsoon advancement, is also now experiencing a noticeable reduction in rainfall. The coastal low-pressure effect has faded, and only scattered showers are predicted over the next three days. Despite this, rising temperatures are expected to continue, with the region witnessing minimal rainfall over the last 48 hours.
