Pune: In a major relief for thousands of citizens across Maharashtra, the state government is set to launch a fully online caste certificate system, aimed at eliminating the tedious paperwork, long queues, and bureaucratic delays currently involved in the process.
Until now, obtaining a caste certificate or caste validity certificate required citizens to make multiple visits to government offices, endure a time-consuming verification process, and submit numerous documents — a process often stretching over several weeks or even months. However, this scenario is about to change.
The Maharashtra government has officially approved the implementation of a computerized, AI-driven online caste certification system that promises speed, transparency, and convenience.
The new system is being developed jointly by BARTI (Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Research and Training Institute) and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). It aims to make the entire process digital and user-friendly, enabling applicants to apply and receive their caste certificates with just a few clicks.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed all relevant departments to submit a detailed action plan within 100 days to ensure swift and effective implementation of the system.
Key Features of the Online Caste Certificate System:
AI-Based Interface: An intelligent user interface will provide real-time guidance to applicants throughout the process.
Auto Verification: Applicant details such as name, family information, and Aadhaar-linked address will be automatically verified through integrated databases.
DigiLocker Integration: Essential documents will be fetched directly from DigiLocker, increasing both reliability and processing speed.
Rapid Turnaround: A process that currently takes weeks or months is expected to be completed in just a few hours.

Scheduled Castes (SC)
Scheduled Tribes (ST)
Nomadic and Denotified Tribes
Other Backward Classes (OBC)
Special Backward Categories
These communities often require caste certificates to access reservations in education, government jobs, electoral opportunities, and various welfare schemes. Simplifying this process is expected to significantly boost their access to these entitlements.
