Pune: The weekend brought a wave of tourists to Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani, thanks to back-to-back holidays on Saturday and Sunday, coupled with a break in the monsoon showers. However, the surge in visitors led to complete traffic mayhem across Mahabaleshwar, exposing a glaring lack of preparedness from the local administration, municipal authorities, and police.
With roads clogged for hours, the situation turned particularly distressing for families, senior citizens, and children, many of whom were left stranded in vehicles without any relief in sight.
This being the peak tourist season—coinciding with school and college summer vacations—the twin hill stations saw an overwhelming influx of visitors. Tourists arrived in droves, some in private vehicles and others via public transport, causing both towns to overflow with traffic. The absence of basic traffic management and crowd control sparked outrage among tourists, many of whom questioned whether such a mismanaged destination deserved their visit at all.
Frustrated travelers voiced their disappointment, citing lost time, wasted money, and ruined experiences. “Is this how a renowned tourist spot should function?” some asked, while others demanded immediate intervention from authorities. The overall sentiment was clear: the administration must step up before the reputation of Mahabaleshwar as a premier tourist destination takes a serious hit.
