Pune: After a short dry spell, the monsoon has returned with renewed vigor in many parts of Maharashtra. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a high-alert warning for the next 24 hours, predicting heavy to very heavy rain in six districts: Kolhapur, Pune, Raigad, Sangli, Satara, and Thane.
The IMD’s latest advisory indicates the likelihood of intense rainfall in isolated pockets of these regions. Local authorities have urged citizens to stay vigilant and take necessary safety measures.
This year’s monsoon arrived in Maharashtra significantly earlier than expected, making landfall on May 25—nearly two weeks ahead of the typical onset date of June 7. Following its early arrival, the state experienced several days of sustained downpours, which disrupted early agricultural preparations. However, a brief lull in rainfall allowed farmers to resume work in their fields.
The recent resurgence of rain over the past 48 hours has brought timely relief to the farming community, particularly those awaiting the right conditions to begin sowing. Agricultural activity is now anticipated to accelerate across various districts.
In Mumbai, the day began with cloudy skies, culminating in heavy showers by evening across the city and surrounding suburbs. The rain led to a significant drop in temperature, offering respite from the lingering summer heat.
In Sangli, consistent rainfall over the last two days has caused rivers and streams to rise, signaling the onset of a more active monsoon phase. This development has sparked optimism among farmers for a productive sowing season.
As Maharashtra gears up for further rainfall, the IMD is closely tracking weather developments and continues to advise caution, especially in areas prone to flooding and landslides.
