Pune: Cybercriminals cheated a 65-year-old woman of ₹40.2 lakh by promising lucrative returns on stock market investments. A case has been registered against the fraudsters at Kondhwa Police Station.
According to the complaint lodged by Chitra Khimwasara, a resident of Bibwewadi, unknown cybercrooks contacted her on February 16 and lured her with the promise of high returns from the stock market. Initially, Khimwasara invested a small sum and was paid good returns, which built her trust.
Encouraged by this, the fraudsters persuaded her to invest more money. Over the past five months, Khimwasara transferred a total of ₹40.2 lakh into the account provided by the accused. However, after receiving the money, they failed to pay any returns or refund her principal amount.
When she tried to contact them, their mobile number was switched off. Realizing she had been duped, Khimwasara approached Kondhwa Police Station and registered a complaint. Police Inspector Suraj Bendre of the Crime Branch is investigating the case.
Police have appealed to the public to remain cautious and avoid engaging with unknown persons promising unrealistic returns on investments.
