Pune: City witnessed two troubling incidents recently that once again bring the issue of dowry harassment into focus. In one case, a highly educated woman took her own life after enduring sustained abuse by her in-laws. In a separate incident, a married woman was forced to leave her home after her in-laws became violent over dowry demands. Both cases have triggered serious concern over the safety of women.
First Incident
A 29-year-old woman, Deepika Pramod Jadhav, reportedly ended her life after facing continuous harassment by her mother-in-law. The incident occurred in the Satav Nagar area, off Handewadi Road, on Friday, June 20. Deepika’s father has lodged a formal complaint at Kalepadal police station, stating that her mother-in-law had been demanding money and gold since the day of her marriage and frequently subjected her to cruelty. According to the complaint, the sustained mental torture left Deepika feeling trapped, prompting her to take the extreme step.
Second Incident
In Bhavani Peth, a 32-year-old married woman was allegedly beaten, threatened, and ultimately thrown out of her home by her husband and in-laws for failing to meet their dowry expectations. Following her eviction, the woman approached Khadak police station to file a formal complaint. The victim stated that despite enduring repeated physical and psychological abuse, the harassment never ceased, and her in-laws eventually forced her to leave.
Both cases have been registered, and investigations are underway.
