Bollywood has been shaken by the shocking loss of one of its greatest and most cherished icons, as veteran actor Dharmendra Deol passed away at the age of 89. Known fondly as the “He-Man” of Indian cinema, Dharmendra leaves behind an extraordinary legacy spanning over six decades, with more than 300 films to his name.
Making his debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, Dharmendra quickly rose to fame in the mid-1960s with memorable performances in films such as Ayee Milan Ki Bela, Phool Aur Patthar, and Aaye Din Bahar Ke. His powerful screen presence, good looks, and emotional depth made him one of the most admired actors of his era.
From the late 1960s through the 1980s, he delivered some of Bollywood’s biggest blockbusters, including Sholay, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Jugnu, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Seeta Aur Geeta, Pratiggya, Dharam Veer, Charas, Ghulami, The Burning Train, Chupke Chupke, Haqeeqat, and many more. His ability to effortlessly switch between intense action roles and light-hearted comedy made him a rare and versatile talent in Indian cinema.
Recognized as one of the most successful stars in Bollywood history, Dharmendra holds the record for starring in the highest number of hit films in Hindi cinema. In 2012, he was honored with the prestigious Padma Bhushan for his immense contribution to Indian film culture.
In later years, he continued to impress audiences with impactful character roles in acclaimed films such as Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Life in a… Metro, Apne, Johnny Gaddaar, Yamla Pagla Deewana, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya.
Professionally, Dharmendra was last seen in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024), starring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. He was also set to appear in an upcoming war drama directed by Sriram Raghavan, based on the life of Arun Khetarpal, the youngest Param Vir Chakra recipient. The film features Agastya Nanda and Simar Bhatia in lead roles, along with Jaideep Ahlawat and Sikandar Kher, and is scheduled for a December release.
