Raipur mall vandalism erupted on Wednesday when a mob forced its way into Magneto Mall and vandalised Christmas decorations. The incident unfolded during a statewide Chhattisgarh bandh called over alleged religious conversions.
Witnesses said around 80–90 people, some carrying wooden sticks, entered the mall and damaged Christmas installations. Security guards tried to intervene but failed to stop the group. Shoppers and families inside the mall panicked and rushed for safety.
Employees recount fear and intimidation
Mall staff described intimidation and chaos. One employee said the group shouted threats and targeted festive décor. Another staffer said women cried as the mob charged at people who tried to intervene. Moviegoers left in fear.
Bandh linked to Kanker violence
The bandh followed violence in Kanker district earlier this month. A burial dispute in Badetevda village triggered clashes between two communities. More than 20 police personnel suffered injuries. Authorities later exhumed the body and completed burial as per procedure.
Mixed bandh response, strong online backlash
The bandh saw a mixed response across the state. Several urban markets closed, while many rural pockets functioned normally. Police reported isolated incidents of unrest.
On social media, citizens condemned Raipur mall vandalism and apologised to the world for the scenes. Many users stressed that vandalism cannot represent India’s plural culture. Civil society groups urged calm and lawful protest.
Authorities assess security
Police increased patrols around commercial hubs in Raipur after the incident. Officials said they would review CCTV footage and take action based on evidence.
Raipur mall vandalism has renewed debate on protest methods, public safety, and religious tolerance. The city now awaits firm accountability to restore confidence.
