The H-1B visa changes impact Indians directly after the Trump administration officially scrapped the long-standing lottery system for granting H-1B visas. Under the revised rules, the United States will now prioritise foreign workers with higher skills, specialised expertise, and higher wages, marking a decisive shift in US immigration policy.

What the New H-1B Rules Mean

Earlier, H-1B visas were allotted through a random lottery due to heavy demand. The new system replaces chance with merit-based selection, ranking applications according to salary levels, qualifications, and the criticality of skills. The US government says the change aims to attract top global talent while protecting domestic workers.

H-1B Visa Changes Impact Indians the Most

Indians form nearly 70–75% of H-1B applicants, making them the most affected group. Senior professionals in artificial intelligence, data science, semiconductors, healthcare, cybersecurity, and advanced engineering are likely to benefit due to higher wages and niche expertise.

However, fresh graduates, entry-level professionals, and mid-level IT workers from India may face reduced chances, as lower-salary roles will now rank poorly in the selection process.

Impact on Indian Students and IT Companies

Indian students studying in the US may find it harder to transition from student visas to H-1B unless they secure high-paying jobs quickly. Indian IT companies, which earlier relied on bulk filings, will have to rethink staffing strategies, increase salaries for critical roles, or shift more work to offshore centres in India.

Bigger Picture

Experts say the H-1B visa changes impact Indians by ending mass hiring routes and favouring elite talent. While the policy closes doors for many, it also rewards highly skilled Indian professionals who can command global wages, reshaping the future of Indian migration to the US.
