Prayagraj: A tragic stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj claimed the lives of 30 devotees and left 60 others injured. The incident occurred as thousands of devotees gathered to take a holy dip at the auspicious Brahma Muhurta, which is considered sacred. However, an unexpected surge in the crowd led to chaos and a stampede, according to Maha Kumbh Police Director General Vaibhav Krishna.

Krishna stated, “Devotees were waiting for Brahma Muhurta to take the holy dip, as it is believed to be highly auspicious. Suddenly, a large number of devotees arrived for darshan, and an overwhelming crowd followed from behind. This created panic and resulted in the stampede. There were no VIP movements scheduled for the 29th, nor are there any planned for upcoming bathing days. Today marks Mauni Amavasya, one of the most significant bathing days, which led to an increase in the number of devotees at the Akhara area. The overcrowding caused people standing at the back to push forward, leading to the unfortunate incident.”

Authorities have confirmed 30 deaths, out of which 25 victims have been identified so far. Additionally, 60 devotees sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. To assist families in locating their loved ones, a helpline number (1920) has been set up.

Eyewitnesses described the chaotic situation, stating that the sudden increase in crowd density resulted in the deadly stampede. “People had gathered for the sacred bath around 3 AM to mark Mauni Amavasya. However, as the crowd swelled uncontrollably, panic ensued, and the stampede occurred,” an eyewitness recounted.

Some devotees also reported cases of theft during the incident. “There was an enormous rush, and in the midst of the chaos, my family member got injured. People kept pushing forward, and there was no one to regulate the crowd,” said one devotee.

Authorities are now working to ensure better crowd management in the coming days to prevent further tragedies.
