The CBI defence bribery case escalated on Friday after the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested Lt Col Deepak Kumar Sharma, a serving Army officer posted in the Department of Defence Production, and a private individual, Vinod Kumar, in connection with allegations of bribery and criminal conspiracy.
The case was registered on December 19, 2025, following credible source-based inputs. Lt Col Sharma was serving as Deputy Planning Officer (International Cooperation and Exports) under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India.
Alleged Bribe Delivery and Foreign Firm Angle
According to the investigation, Vinod Kumar allegedly delivered a ₹3 lakh bribe on December 18, 2025 to Lt Col Sharma on behalf of a Dubai-based company, which was seeking undue advantage in defence-related processes.
The FIR also names Col Kajal Bali, wife of the arrested officer and currently posted as Commanding Officer, 16 Infantry Division Ordnance Unit (DOU) in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. Officials have clarified that naming in the FIR does not imply guilt and the probe remains open-ended. The CBI defence bribery case is examining possible procedural manipulation and wider institutional involvement.
Searches Across States, Large Cash Recovery
CBI teams conducted coordinated searches in Delhi, Sri Ganganagar, Bengaluru, and Jammu. During searches at Lt Col Sharma’s Delhi residence, investigators recovered the ₹3 lakh bribe amount along with ₹2.23 lakh in unaccounted cash.
An additional ₹10 lakh in cash and incriminating documents were seized from premises linked to the accused in Sri Ganganagar. Searches at the officer’s official workplace in New Delhi are still underway.
Court Production and Custody
Both accused were produced before the competent court and have been remanded to CBI police custody till December 23, 2025. Officials stated that further examination of financial trails, foreign links, and official files is ongoing.
As the investigation deepens, the CBI defence bribery case is being closely watched for its implications on defence procurement integrity and internal oversight mechanisms.
