Pune: Amid ongoing confusion regarding the 40% property tax rebate, civic activists have urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to clearly indicate in tax bills whether taxpayers have received the benefit. Vivek Velankar, president of Sajag Nagrik Manch, has formally requested the civic commissioner to address this issue to eliminate uncertainty among property owners.
Velankar highlighted that many taxpayers remain unaware of their rebate status, leading to frequent visits to municipal offices for clarification. “The property tax bill does not explicitly state whether the rebate has been granted, causing unnecessary doubts and inconvenience for citizens,” he said.
He further noted that even PMC’s property tax department officials struggle to verify the rebate status by merely looking at the bill. “It is surprising that the tax department staff also need to check the municipal website to confirm if a rebate has been applied. This reflects a lack of transparency and an inefficient system,” Velankar added.
With PMC currently preparing property tax bills for the 2025-26 financial year, Velankar has urged the civic body to ensure clear mention of the rebate status in the bills. He believes this small but significant change will reduce confusion and enhance transparency in the taxation process.
“To maintain clarity and avoid disputes, PMC must ensure that tax bills explicitly indicate whether the 40% rebate has been applied. This will help taxpayers understand their dues without unnecessary confusion,” he said.
The property tax rebate issue has sparked debates and protests in the past, with citizens demanding a more transparent process. The Sajag Nagrik Manch has consistently advocated for improved governance and accountability in municipal administration.
Now, the onus is on PMC to take action and ensure that property tax bills for the upcoming financial year reflect the rebate status prominently, bringing relief to property owners and fostering a more taxpayer-friendly approach.
In addition to rebate concerns, PMC’s annual property tax bill distribution, which typically begins on April 1, has been delayed by a month. The property tax department is currently tackling a backlog of tasks, including processing PT 3 applications and implementing revised tax rates.
The delay is primarily due to an overwhelming workload, with 1.50 lakh pending PT form applications still under review. As a result, tax invoices will now be issued after May 1 instead of the usual April rollout.
PMC processes approximately 14.25 lakh tax bills across the city each year, following a two-step approach: bills are first uploaded online and then sent by post in the first week of April. However, this year, both online access and physical distribution have been postponed due to technical and operational challenges.
With the rebate issue and tax bill delays, taxpayers are hoping for swift action from PMC to enhance efficiency, transparency, and ease of access in property tax administration.
