New Wage Code: full and final settlement within 2 working  The government has introduced a major update under the New Wage Code, requiring all companies in India to release full and final settlement within 2 working days after an employee leaves the job. This rule applies to resignation, dismissal and retrenchment cases.

The New Wage Code changes how companies handle pending salary, leave encashment, reimbursements and other wage-related payments. Earlier, many employees waited 30 to 45 days for their full and final settlement. Now, the settlement must be done almost immediately after the last working day.

Legal experts say the New Wage Code improves financial stability for employees who switch jobs or work on short-term contracts. It also brings a uniform rule for companies across India.

Some payments like gratuity follow their own timelines based on separate laws and company rules. But all wage components covered under the New Wage Code must be paid within the 2-day (full and final settlement within 2 working days) deadline.

Employers must now improve payroll, documentation and exit processes to meet this shorter timeline. For smoother implementation, HR teams may use automated tools and updated compliance systems.
