Pimpri Chinchwad: A 36-year-old man from Pimpralgurv, Pune district, has died after suffering from Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), which was further complicated by pneumonia. The patient, who was diagnosed with GBS on January 21, was undergoing treatment at Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital in Sant Tukaram Nagar. Despite medical intervention, the man passed away on January 30.

Following his death, the hospital formed an inquiry committee to determine the exact cause and assess whether there were any lapses in treatment. The committee concluded that pneumonia caused respiratory distress, which ultimately led to the patient’s death, in addition to the effects of Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

The case comes on the heels of another fatality in the region, a 67-year-old woman from Pimpri, who passed away on January 25 after battling pneumonia and respiratory failure following a GBS diagnosis. She had been receiving treatment for over two and a half months. Medical authorities have stated that GBS was not the primary cause of her death.

To date, the city has reported 13 cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, with some patients recovering, while others remain under treatment. Health officials suspect that the young man, who worked as a cab driver, may have contracted the illness during his travels from Pune. Meanwhile, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Health and Medical Department confirmed that no contaminated viruses were found in the city’s water supply.
