Pune: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a Red Alert for Pune district and an Orange Alert for Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and areas of the Western Ghats, warning of extremely heavy rains in the next 24 hours. The advisory arrives as several regions of Maharashtra have been grappling with intense downpours for the past two days.
According to the IMD, Pune, Mumbai, and the Konkan and Ghat areas — especially Satara and Nashik — are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rains. In Pune, overnight downpours caused widespread waterlogging and traffic disruption, with floodwaters entering homes in low-lying areas.
Coastal areas such as Thane, Mumbai Suburban, Mumbai City, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg may witness high tidal activity, with wave heights reaching 3.5–3.8 meters between 5:30 PM and 11:30 PM on June 19. Authorities have urged residents in low-lying and coastal zones to stay alert and take precautions.
In Raigad, relentless rains have caused the Amba River to breach its danger level, forcing the closure of the Khopoli–Wakan route. The Kundalika River has also crossed its warning mark, flooding adjacent roadways and prompting traffic diversions. Police have implemented route changes to maintain safety.
With the southwest monsoon now active across Maharashtra, meteorologists anticipate widespread rain across the state in the coming days. The Konkan and Western Ghats can expect significant downpours on Thursday, while Marathwada and Vidarbha may experience thunderstorms and lightning. Authorities have issued alerts across the state, advising people to stay indoors when possible, limit travel, and adhere to official safety instructions.
