New Delhi: Parliament Pollution Protest took a dramatic turn on Wednesday when Opposition MPs entered Parliament wearing gas masks. They said this was the only way to show how serious Delhi’s air pollution problem has become. The protest happened on the second day of the Winter Session, and the MPs demanded that Parliament stop all other business and discuss the rising health emergency.
Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda, also wearing a gas mask, said the government must stop blaming other states and instead take real action. He asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lead a joint effort with the chief ministers of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. According to Hooda, these states must work together on a proper plan, with funds assigned, so that the NCR region can get long-term relief from toxic air.
Deepender Singh Hooda also said, “People are finding it hard to breathe. Without this mask, it hurts. I have submitted a notice to suspend business so that we can discuss this matter immediately.”
The Parliament Pollution Protest came on a day when Delhi woke up to another thick layer of smog. The Air Quality Index (AQI) at 7 am was 376, which is in the “Very Poor” category. Some areas recorded even higher numbers, moving into the “Severe” category.
Around India Gate and Kartavya Path, a heavy blanket of smog reduced visibility sharply, with AQI touching 356. In Akshardham, a video showed the entire area covered in toxic haze, with AQI levels reaching 405, which is considered “Severe”.
The Parliament Pollution Protest shows that the Opposition wants a serious discussion and a clear action plan. With pollution rising again, the pressure on the government is likely to grow.
