Pune: To facilitate smoother traffic movement at Sangamwadi Chowk amid major infrastructure enhancements, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has chosen a single-span steel girder design for the upcoming flyover. This design will eliminate the need for a central pillar at the bustling Bindu Madhav Balasaheb Thackeray Chowk in Yerawada, ensuring minimal disruption to traffic during the construction phase.
On June 4, PMC floated a tender for the flyover and grade separator project, pegged at an estimated cost of ₹115.73 crore. Due to space constraints, the grade separator will be constructed in a later phase. The entire project is scheduled for completion within 30 months.
According to officials from PMC’s project department, the work will commence along the BRTS corridor. The single-span girder will be mounted on side supports, allowing the side lanes to remain operational for vehicular movement, thereby reducing the chances of traffic congestion.
Ahmednagar Road is set to witness several major infrastructure projects, including an elevated corridor from Vimannagar Chowk to Shirur, a flyover and grade separator at Shastrinagar, and an extension of the metro line from Ramwadi to Wagholi. These initiatives are anticipated to significantly increase traffic density on the roads connecting to Sangamwadi Chowk.
Sangamwadi Chowk is a critical traffic junction linking Sangamwadi, Yerawada, Deccan College, and Pune Airport. As per the project’s blueprint and consultant’s recommendations, the new infrastructure will include:
A four-lane flyover connecting Khadki to Bund Garden Road
A one-way grade separator facilitating traffic flow from Sangamwadi to Dr Ambedkar Chowk and Bund Garden
Additional slip roads and related infrastructure to support smoother traffic operations
The proposed flyover will improve vehicular movement between Deccan College and Yerawada, while the grade separator is intended to streamline traffic heading from Shivajinagar via Sangamwadi Road toward Airport Road and Yerawada.
