Pune: With the monsoon season approaching, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced a ₹15 crore plan to repair and upgrade roads across the city. The initiative, led by the PMC’s Road Department, focuses on strengthening approximately 50 kilometers of main roads using modern micro-surfacing techniques. Tenders for the project are set to be released shortly.

Following concerns raised at high administrative levels—including from the President’s office and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar—PMC has expedited the roadworks to avoid a repeat of previous years’ monsoon damage. So far, repair work on 15 key roads has been completed, while work on 17 additional stretches is underway.

The strategy involves dividing Pune into two zones—East and West—with ₹7.5 crore allocated for each. The use of micro-surfacing technology, covering an estimated 3.8 lakh square meters, aims to improve road resilience and prevent pothole formation during heavy rains. This resurfacing method has already shown positive results in Pune and is expected to maintain road quality for up to seven years.

To ensure precise planning, the Road Department conducted assessments using the Road Asset Management System to identify priority roads needing maintenance. The advanced surfacing technique is intended to extend the roads’ life span by three to four years, while also being a more budget-friendly solution for urban infrastructure maintenance.

With work scheduled for completion before the rains begin, PMC officials are hopeful that the new approach will significantly improve road conditions and reduce monsoon-related damage across the city.
