Pune: The city recorded a significant surge in COVID-19 infections during May 2025, with 108 new cases reported—marking the highest monthly count this year, as per data from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). While health authorities say the situation is under control, the sharp uptick has raised public concern.
From January to April, Pune had seen only three cases in total—one each in January, March, and April. However, May alone accounted for the vast majority of the year’s cases, bringing the total to 121. As of the latest update, the city has 94 active COVID-19 cases. Of these, 84 individuals are recovering at home, while 10 have been admitted to hospitals for treatment.
On Monday, 13 new infections were recorded, while eight patients were discharged after successful recovery. PMC Health Chief Dr. Nina Borade attributed the rise in case numbers to a recent increase in testing. “Previously, testing wasn’t consistently done for mild symptoms. Now, patients with even flu-like symptoms are being screened for COVID-19,” she explained. She reassured the public, stating that the city’s healthcare infrastructure is fully prepared, and emphasized the importance of basic precautions like hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette.
The surge in Pune follows a similar trend in Mumbai, which saw 483 new cases during May. On Monday alone, Maharashtra reported 59 new COVID-19 cases, including 20 from Mumbai, 17 from Pune, and two from Pimpri-Chinchwad. Since January, the state has registered a total of 873 cases and 10 COVID-related deaths, with 494 cases currently active.
