Pune: The Pune Airport Incident caused major disruption to flight operations on Friday night after an Indian Air Force Sukhoi Su-30MKI aircraft encountered a technical failure at Lohegaon Air Force Station. However, following urgent repair work and safety checks, the runway has now been restored and declared operational.
In an official statement, the Indian Air Force confirmed that the runway, which was temporarily unavailable due to the aircraft incident, has been cleared for operations. All necessary safety inspections and clearances have been completed, and operations are now resuming in a phased manner. As a result, the Pune Airport Incident situation is gradually stabilising.
According to sources, the disruption occurred due to a nose gear malfunction or tyre burst, which led to an aborted takeoff. The aircraft got stuck on the runway and had to be stopped using an emergency arrester barrier. Fortunately, both pilots are safe, and no damage to civil property has been reported.
Meanwhile, the Pune Airport Incident significantly impacted civil aviation schedules. Airport authorities reported that IndiGo cancelled 31 arrivals and 34 departures, while Air India cancelled 3 arrivals and 3 departures. Additionally, SpiceJet, Akasa Air and Air India Express also reported multiple cancellations.
Following the incident, airport authorities and the Indian Air Force launched immediate restoration efforts. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol closely monitored the situation and coordinated with officials to ensure a quick resolution.
Officials confirmed that runway repair work was completed early Saturday morning. The first departure resumed at 7:30 AM, followed by the first arrival at 8:00 AM. Authorities expect normal flight operations to be fully restored through the day.
