Pune: Following the suspension of an MSRTC driver for watching an IPL match, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has reiterated its strict stance against mobile phone usage and tobacco consumption among its drivers and conductors. Violators risk suspension from duty.
The announcement comes after a viral video showed a heated altercation between a PMPML bus driver, conductor, and a biker in the Loni area on Sunday. Additionally, a passenger had earlier reported an MSRTC driver on social media for watching an IPL match while driving, leading to immediate action.
PMPML has long prohibited its drivers and conductors from using mobile phones, wearing headphones, and consuming tobacco or pan masala while operating buses. The transport body has warned that breaking these rules could lead to a two-month suspension, as per a previously issued directive.
PMPML employs around 9,400 drivers, with nearly 4,400 on a contractual basis. These drivers frequently face scrutiny over reckless driving, traffic violations, and misbehavior with passengers. Complaints often highlight issues such as buses lacking route boards, improper parking, and failure to follow lane discipline.
To address public grievances, PMPML has urged passengers to report misconduct by drivers and conductors. Complaints can be lodged via email at complaints@pmpml.org, through WhatsApp at 9881495589, or by submitting proof at the nearest PMPML depot.
In 2024, Pune traffic police imposed fines totaling ₹10 lakh on 877 PMPML bus drivers for various traffic infractions. The transport authority has once again reminded its drivers to adhere to traffic rules and maintain discipline while on duty.
Passengers are encouraged to report violations with photos or videos via WhatsApp at +91 9881495589.
