Pimpri Chinchwad: In a pioneering move towards eco-friendly urban development, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has rolled out a citywide Green Society Initiative. The program is designed to inspire and recognise housing societies that actively implement sustainable environmental practices.

The initiative emphasises decentralised, community-level solutions to foster greener, more responsible neighbourhoods. Participating societies will be evaluated on critical sustainability aspects including proper waste segregation, composting organic waste on-site, adoption of solar energy, implementation of rainwater harvesting systems, and the treatment and reuse of wastewater.

Each society that meets a specific environmental criterion will be awarded a Green Star. Societies that successfully achieve all five criteria will be honoured in a formal ceremony led by Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh.

Deputy Commissioner Sachin Pawar, who is spearheading the project, shared his optimism about the programme’s potential “This initiative offers a clear pathway for housing societies to turn their green aspirations into practical action. We are confident that the citizens of Pimpri Chinchwad will rise to the occasion and become role models in sustainable living. Through this, we aim to cultivate a citywide culture of environmental consciousness—not just through regulations, but through active community participation.”
What Qualifies a ‘Green Society’?

Waste Segregation: Consistent separation of dry and wet waste at the household level.

In-House Composting: Converting organic waste into compost within the society’s premises.

Solar Energy Use: Installing rooftop solar systems to power common areas.

Rainwater Harvesting: Collecting and storing rainwater to alleviate water shortages.

Wastewater Recycling: Treating grey water for non-potable uses like gardening.

How the Recognition Works:

Societies receive one Green Star for every individual criterion they meet.

Those that accomplish all five criteria will be specially felicitated by PCMC leadership.

The Green Society Initiative represents a major step in aligning community living with environmental stewardship, reinforcing the message that sustainability begins at home.
