Pune: Pune police launched an extensive crackdown on drunk driving on Holi, setting up checkpoints at 90 locations across the city. A total of 400 intoxicated drivers were caught, and 386 vehicles were seized during the operation. Additionally, police penalized 6,118 motorists for traffic violations, collecting fines totaling ₹50.94 lakh.
Police had issued warnings ahead of Holi against driving under the influence. From midnight on March 13, the police conducted special nakabandi (checkpost) operations across key roads and city areas, using iron barricades to stop vehicles. The operation continued until midnight on March 15, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Amol Zhende.
During the operation, police checked 8,552 motorists using breath analyzers to detect alcohol consumption. As a result, 402 drivers were found drunk and booked accordingly. The crackdown involved personnel from 37 traffic divisions across Pune.
Police also took action against speeding, triple-seat riding on two-wheelers, and driving in the wrong direction. A total of 386 vehicles were seized, and fines were imposed on thousands of violators, generating revenue of nearly ₹50.64 lakh, DCP Zhende confirmed.
