Pune International Airport achieved a major milestone in 2024 with the inauguration of its New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB). The terminal was virtually launched on March 10, 2024, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar.
Under the leadership of Murlidhar Mohol, Hon’ble Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Cooperation, the terminal officially opened its doors on July 14, 2024, with Air India and Air India Express launching domestic flights. The transition to full international operations was completed by December 24, 2024.
A Hub of Innovation and Sustainability
Spanning over 51,595 square meters, the new terminal enhances the airport’s capacity, accommodating up to nine million passengers annually. With state-of-the-art infrastructure and a strong focus on sustainability, the terminal has earned a GRIHA-4 certification, reflecting its commitment to environmentally friendly practices.
Key innovations include:
In-line Baggage Screening: A TSA-certified system that automates the baggage screening process, reducing queues and wait times.
Smart Visual Docking Guidance System (SVDGS): This system automates the docking process at all 10 aircraft parking stands, improving aircraft turnaround times.
Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs): Six AEDs have been installed throughout the terminal to ensure passenger safety in case of emergencies.
Enhancing the Passenger Experience
The terminal features numerous modern amenities designed to enhance the overall travel experience:
Dining and Shopping: A mix of global brands such as Starbucks and KFC, alongside local favorites like Chitale Bandhu, ensures a variety of dining options for passengers.
Executive Lounges: Premium lounges with live kitchen counters and comfortable seating provide a luxurious setting for travelers.
Boosting Security and Celebrating Culture
In terms of security, the terminal has installed 16 advanced X-ray baggage inspection machines and increased the number of security personnel to ensure passenger safety. The terminal also celebrates Maharashtra’s cultural heritage, with stunning artwork, including a bronze statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on horseback and sculptures of traditional musical instruments.
This new terminal promises to enhance the travel experience for millions while promoting sustainability and operational efficiency, positioning Pune International Airport as a key hub for both domestic and international travel.
