Pune: In a significant move to improve travel comfort for mothers, Pune Metro has introduced the ‘Matrushakti Nursing Pods’ at its stations. The initiative, launched on February 2, 2025, at the District Court Interchange Metro Station, aims to provide a convenient and private space for breastfeeding mothers and those needing to change their babies’ diapers.
The nursing pods were inaugurated by Hon. Meghana Bordikar, Minister of State for the Government of Maharashtra. Pune Metro Director Shri Atul Gadgil, General Manager Captain Rajendra Saner-Patil, and other senior officials were also present at the event. This thoughtful initiative was made possible through collaboration with the Social Thumb Foundation.
The ‘Matrushakti Nursing Pods’ are fully air-conditioned, offering mothers a clean, private, and comfortable environment to tend to their babies while traveling. Each pod is equipped with essential amenities such as fans, charging points, diaper-changing stations, fire-resistant systems, and vending machines, ensuring maximum convenience and safety. The pods are designed to accommodate two mothers at a time, with safety locks installed for added security and privacy.
Currently, Pune Metro serves a daily ridership of 160,000 passengers, many of whom are women, including mothers. The introduction of these nursing pods addresses a critical need for hygienic and private spaces where mothers can breastfeed or change their babies during their commute.
Hon. Meghana Bordikar praised the initiative, stating, “Pune Metro is a world-class public transportation system that is clean, affordable, and well-maintained. With the introduction of the Matrushakti Nursing Pods, Pune Metro has provided an essential service for breastfeeding mothers, ensuring they can comfortably nurse their babies while traveling.”
This move comes after the Prime Minister’s inauguration of the underground corridor of Pune Metro’s first phase in September 2024, marking an ongoing commitment to enhancing the city’s public transportation infrastructure. Pune Metro also plans to expand this initiative by installing more nursing pods at additional stations to further support mothers and improve their travel experience.
This thoughtful development underscores Pune Metro’s dedication to inclusivity and convenience, making it easier for mothers to travel while caring for their young children.
