Pune : The recent detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China has sparked public concern, but health experts stress that HMPV is not a new virus and does not pose the same level of global threat as COVID-19. HMPV is a common virus known for causing mild cold-like symptoms, particularly in children under five years old.
As HMPV cases have been reported in India, including in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad, the Maharashtra Health Department has instructed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to set aside 350 beds at Naidu Hospital as a precautionary step.
Additionally, a specialized 50-bed isolation ward has been established at Naidu Infectious Diseases Hospital to manage any potential cases.
Health authorities have issued a set of hygiene recommendations to help prevent the spread of HMPV:
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing.
Avoid close contact with individuals who are sick.
Refrain from touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
Stay home if you are feeling unwell.
Although the situation is being closely monitored, health experts reassure the public that there is no cause for panic. The virus is not new, and continuing to practice proper hygiene and following health guidelines will help prevent its spread.
