Pune: A marginal drop in new COVID-19 cases has brought a temporary sense of relief for residents and healthcare officials in Pune and across Maharashtra. The city recorded 14 fresh infections today, contributing to a total of 40 new cases statewide. However, the growing number of fatalities—now at 28—continues to be a pressing concern.

According to the Public Health Department, Maharashtra currently has 540 active COVID-19 cases. Most of the newly infected individuals are reported to be exhibiting only mild symptoms.

Despite the minor decline in daily cases, the virus has begun to spread into new districts, including Wardha and Chandrapur. Meanwhile, Mumbai remains the most affected area in terms of cumulative cases, with the total number of infections—including recoveries—reaching 851.

Authorities reported that 27 out of the 28 recent deaths were individuals with pre-existing health conditions. The cause of death for one case remains under investigation.

A district-wise breakdown shows that Mumbai accounted for 22 deaths, followed by 2 in Pune, and 1 each in Wardha and Nagpur. Chandrapur reported 2 fatalities. Within the Pune region specifically, 10 deaths occurred under the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), while the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) reported 2 deaths.

Health officials have urged the public to remain cautious, as several states and countries are also experiencing an upward trend in COVID-19 infections, signaling the continued need for preventive measures.
