Pune : Pune’s Lohegaon area experienced a scorching heatwave on Sunday, with temperatures reaching 42.8 degrees Celsius — the highest recorded in Maharashtra so far this season. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the temperature was 4.1 degrees Celsius above normal for this time of year.
The IMD has predicted that Pune will continue to face above-normal temperatures until at least April 30. On Sunday alone, ten weather stations across the region, including Shivajinagar and Pashan, recorded maximum temperatures at or above 40 degrees Celsius.
“In Pune and Marathwada, hot and humid conditions are expected to persist through the end of April,” said S.D. Sanap, Senior Meteorologist at IMD Pune.
Meanwhile, in Vidarbha, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for light rainfall in isolated areas through April 30. Meteorologists attribute the current weather patterns to multiple active systems: an upper-air cyclonic circulation over central Assam, a north-south trough stretching from West Vidarbha to the Gulf of Mannar, and a western disturbance affecting southwest Rajasthan.
Due to these combined systems, Vidarbha is likely to experience scattered to widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph, with occasional gusts up to 60 kmph.
Authorities have urged citizens to take precautions, including staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activities during peak hours, and seeking shelter during thunderstorms to ensure their safety.
