Pune: In response to Türkiye’s recent support for Pakistan amid tensions with India, traders in Pune have intensified their boycott of Turkish goods. After previously halting the procurement of Turkish apples, the Pune Spice and Dry Fruits Association has now expanded the ban to include apricots and hazelnuts imported from Türkiye.
The decision follows Türkiye’s supply of drones to Pakistan during the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict, which traders viewed as a betrayal given India’s past support for Türkiye during its times of need. The association has called on all importers to align with the boycott, emphasizing the significant economic contribution of Indian consumers to the Turkish economy, which amounts to thousands of crores annually.
The boycott is beginning to influence consumer behavior, with many Pune residents opting for alternatives from other countries or local sources. Local vendors have observed a noticeable shift in buying patterns, reflecting growing public support for the movement.
If the campaign gains full momentum with collective backing from both traders and importers, it could deliver a substantial blow to Türkiye’s exports. The traders in Pune are united in their stance, viewing the boycott as a matter of principle and national solidarity rather than just a trade issue.
With increasing awareness among consumers and active participation from the trade community, the movement to boycott Turkish products is gaining traction across Pune’s markets.
