Pune: residents are feeling the brunt of a blistering heatwave as temperatures soared to a staggering 42.7°C in Lohegaon on Tuesday, marking the hottest day of the season. The sweltering heat has left citizens struggling, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) urging caution to prevent heat-related health issues.
Shivajinagar recorded a temperature of 41.3°C, crossing the 41°C threshold for the first time this year. Other parts of the city, including Koregaon Park (41.4°C), Pashan (40.6°C), and Chinchwad (40.3°C), are also experiencing extreme heat.
IMD officials attribute the rise in temperature to hot winds blowing from the north and clear skies. This intense heat is expected to last until Thursday, with some relief expected on Friday as moisture-laden winds from the south may lower the temperatures.
Although an official heatwave alert has not been issued—since the temperature has not deviated by more than 4.5°C for two consecutive days—the IMD has warned of “heat stress” and advised the public to stay indoors between 11 am and 4 pm, stay hydrated, and refrain from outdoor physical activities.
Other parts of Maharashtra are also experiencing high temperatures, with Solapur touching 42.8°C, Akola reaching 44.1°C, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) at 41.6°C.
With no immediate relief in sight, Pune’s residents are bracing for more intense heat as summer continues to peak across the state.
