Pune: A recent theft at Swargate Bus Station has raised serious concerns about passenger safety and security measures in the area. A commuter’s laptop was stolen from his bag, casting doubts on the effectiveness of security, despite increased police patrolling following a previous crime at the station. The incident has drawn criticism, with many alleging that the enhanced vigilance exists only on paper.
A case has been lodged at Swargate Police Station based on the victim’s complaint, and authorities have initiated an investigation to identify the culprit.
According to police reports, the complainant, a Wakad resident originally from Mahad, is employed at a private firm on Senapati Bapat Road. On Saturday morning, he, along with his wife and child, arrived at Swargate Bus Station to board a bus to Mahad.
At around 5:30 AM, they boarded the bus, and the complainant placed his laptop bag in the luggage rack. However, before the journey could commence, he checked his belongings and realized that his laptop bag was missing. An unidentified thief had stolen it. The victim promptly reported the matter to the police, and an official case has been registered. Police Sub-Inspector Shirsat is leading the investigation.
This theft follows a shocking incident at the same bus station on February 25, when a female passenger was sexually assaulted by a man posing as a bus conductor. The accused, Dattatray Gade, was arrested by the police, after which security patrols were reportedly increased at the bus station.
However, the recent theft has led to renewed concerns about the effectiveness of these measures. Despite the supposed security reinforcements, incidents continue to occur, leaving passengers and commuters questioning whether authorities are taking adequate steps to ensure public safety.
With repeated crimes at Swargate Bus Station, there is a growing demand for stronger security protocols, enhanced surveillance, and stricter law enforcement to prevent such incidents in the future.
