Pune: In a traffic enforcement drive, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has taken strict action against over 34,000 vehicle owners between January and April 2025 for flouting various traffic rules on key highways connected to Pune. These include the Pune-Mumbai, Pune-Satara, Pune-Solapur, and Pune-Nagar highways.

According to official data, a total of 34,126 motorists were penalised during this four-month period, resulting in the collection of ₹6.37 crore in fines. The enforcement campaign targeted a wide range of violations that contribute to traffic congestion and road accidents.

The RTO has attributed a considerable number of highway issues, including traffic snarls and collisions, to irresponsible driving and non-compliance with transport regulations. Officials have stated that such crackdowns will intensify in the coming weeks, especially on major highway routes.

A breakdown of the violations revealed:

1,016 private vehicles were found operating without valid permits.

4,975 vehicles were running without a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate.

301 vehicles were penalised for stopping at prohibited locations.

38 were charged for breaching road safety norms.

18 vehicles lacked proper number plates.

19 cases involved unauthorised advertising without a license from the RTA.

18 vehicles were flagged for excessive noise due to rattling parts.

All actions were carried out under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. The RTO has reiterated that compliance with traffic laws is essential to ensure road safety and prevent avoidable accidents. Enhanced checking drives are planned across all major routes to enforce stricter discipline among vehicle owners.
