Maharashtra: Several regions in Maharashtra are bracing for thunderstorms and strong winds, even as many parts of the state continue to reel under extreme heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts due to unstable weather conditions and the likelihood of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.
Over the past few days, temperatures have remained alarmingly high, crossing the 40°C mark in many districts. Nandurbar stood out as the hottest location in the state, recording a scorching 46°C. This relentless heatwave has already resulted in a few suspected heatstroke-related fatalities. Meanwhile, coastal regions like Konkan experienced a mix of hot and humid weather on Thursday.
Light showers are expected in scattered regions including Pune, Solapur, Nanded, Latur, and Sindhudurg. Just a week ago, several areas such as Konkan, Nashik, Vidarbha, and Marathwada witnessed unseasonal rains that caused significant damage to standing crops, resulting in heavy financial losses for farmers.
The IMD has cautioned residents of Kolhapur, Nagpur, Gondia, Wardha, Parbhani, Beed, Satara, Amravati, Hingoli, Bhandara, Gadchiroli, Jalna, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Chandrapur. These districts are likely to witness thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds over the coming days. A yellow alert remains in place for these regions.
Although a low-pressure system that had earlier developed in the Bay of Bengal has now dissipated, a trough extending toward northern Vidarbha is likely to keep skies cloudy in that region.
Mumbai, along with other cities like Thane, Raigad, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, and Palghar, is expected to experience dry conditions. Daytime temperatures in Mumbai may climb up to 35°C. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and take steps to avoid heatstroke. Symptoms such as dry mouth, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or reduced urination require immediate medical attention.
