Pune: In a significant move to tackle the rising crime rate in areas like Ramnagar, Mhada Colony, and Gokulnagar, Warje Malwadi Police, under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sambhaji Kadam, have launched a series of effective measures aimed at improving safety and reducing crime.
The initiative includes increased foot patrolling in the evenings, with two to three officers and five to six personnel deployed for surveillance. In addition, officers have been actively engaging in visible policing at key locations like Asha Chowk to prevent harassment and ensure the safety of women. Authorities have been questioning women at markets and other public areas to gather information on potential threats and criminal activities.
One of the key strategies being implemented is sending criminals with a known criminal background, or those likely to disturb public peace, to preventive detention. Several known offenders from the Warje Malwadi Police Station’s records, including Abhijeet alias Chokya Tukaram Yelwande, Omkar alias Tedya Umesh Satpute, Gaurav Sanjay Shelke, and Omkar alias Dhenya Sudhakar Chowdhury, have been targeted under the Maharashtra Slum Dada, Handicrafts, and Drug Criminals, Dangerous Persons Prevention of Actions Act (MPDA). Additionally, action has been taken under MACOCA against criminals like Laxman alias Bhaiya Yedba Shendge, Rohit Vasant Pasalkar, and Aditya alias Bundi Ganesh Mandalik.
Buldhana District Jail
One notable case is that of Omkar alias Denya Sudhakar Chowdhury, who, despite having four crimes registered against him as a minor, continued his criminal activities even after turning 18. In just the past two and a half months, he committed two additional crimes, causing a disturbance in the Ramnagar area. As a result, Chowdhury was detained and has been sent to Buldhana District Jail for a year.
The investigation team, led by Senior Police Inspector Vishwajit Kaingde, Police Inspector (Crime) Nilesh Badakh, and Sub-Inspector of Police Manoj Salunkhe, worked relentlessly to arrest criminals from Lonavla, Dhairi, Ramnagar, and nearby areas. These individuals have since been placed in various jails in Nagpur, Nashik, and Buldhana.
The Warje Malwadi Police are determined to continue this crackdown on crime. Senior Inspector Kaingde emphasized that any criminal who disregards the law will face strict action, with a focus on a zero-tolerance approach. The authorities have also promised to initiate corrective programs for certain offenders.
Residents have been encouraged to go about their daily activities without fear, with a reminder that they can always reach out to the Warje Police in case of any criminal disturbances.
The operation has received valuable support from senior officers including Pravin Kumar Patil, Sambhaji Kadam, and Bhausaheb Pathare, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kothrud Division, Pune City.
