Pune: The city is currently witnessing an outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), which has led to the death of a young man and a 67-year-old woman, causing widespread concern among citizens. This rare neurological disorder presents symptoms such as weakness and tingling sensations in the limbs. The Pune Municipal Corporation is on high alert due to the situation.
In the first incident, a young man originally from Solapur, residing in the DSK Vishwa area of Pune, succumbed to GBS. He was diagnosed with the condition a few days ago and was admitted to a private hospital in Solapur for treatment after his health deteriorated. Although he initially showed signs of recovery and was discharged from the ICU, he experienced severe respiratory distress, which led to his sudden death.
In the second case, a 67-year-old woman undergoing treatment at Pimpri’s Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital died due to pneumonia, which developed as a complication of GBS. The hospital confirmed that she was diagnosed with GBS in November.
The woman was admitted to YCM Hospital on December 29, and she passed away on Tuesday night (January 21). Earlier, she had been admitted to Ruby Hall Clinic on November 17 with fever and weakness in both legs. She progressively lost motor function in her arms and legs, and tests conducted on November 19 confirmed the diagnosis of GBS. Respiratory complications worsened her condition, ultimately leading to her death.
This alarming situation has created an atmosphere of fear among Pune’s residents as more GBS cases are being reported, with some patients in critical condition.
