Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is preparing to launch weekly organic vegetable markets at four prime locations—Lohegaon, Baner, Pashan, and Bavdhan—in the coming months. This initiative, developed in collaboration with the Maharashtra Government and the World Bank, aims to provide residents with fresh, pesticide-free produce while creating a sustainable marketplace for local farmers.
According to PMC Joint Commissionerj, the markets are expected to be operational within two months. “These upgraded weekly farmers’ markets will ensure that people have access to organic fruits and vegetables while offering farmers better profits for their produce. Additionally, this initiative will help ease traffic congestion in the selected areas,” he stated.
To establish the markets, PMC-owned plots have been inspected by the Agriculture Marketing Board, Pune. Once formal proposals are submitted, they will be evaluated by regional and ward offices. If no administrative hurdles arise, the approvals for the designated plots will be processed within 15 days.
