Pune : In response to increasing commuter demand, Pune Metro has announced plans to extend its operating hours until 11 PM by the end of January 2025. Currently, the last trains on both operational routes—the Vanaz-Ramwadi and Pimpri-Swargate corridors—depart at 10 PM. The proposed one-hour extension aims to accommodate late-night travelers, including those arriving from the railway station and airport, and those leaving their workplaces after dark.
Key Changes:
Increased Train Frequency: Post-10 PM, six additional trips will be added on both routes, with trains operating every 10 minutes.
Rising Passenger Numbers: Pune Metro has observed a significant increase in daily ridership, surpassing 200,000 passengers on January 1, 2025, indicating a growing preference for metro services.
Technical Preparations and Implementation:
Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) is working on the technical aspects to extend the services until 11 PM. The authority has received feedback from commuters to improve train operations, with a repeated demand being to extend operational hours until midnight daily and increase the frequency of trains, especially after both routes were made fully functional from October 2024.
Current Routes and Timings:
Vanaz-Ramwadi: Travel time is 37 minutes.
Pimpri-Swargate: Travel time is 34 minutes.
Passenger Feedback:
Commuters have requested extended operating hours to make the metro more accessible, especially for late-night travelers. Similar to PMPML bus services, there is a demand for the metro to operate until late at night.
Online Feedback System:
Maha Metro has launched an online portal where passengers can register complaints, suggestions, and feedback. QR codes are available at each station for easy access.
Key Considerations:
Maintenance and Staffing: Operating the metro until late at night requires adequate maintenance and staffing.
Infrastructure: Some stations lack facilities like parking and auto-rickshaw stands, which need to be addressed.
Safety: Enhancing security measures for late-night services is crucial.
Extending Pune Metro’s operating hours to 11 PM is a significant step towards improving public transportation and meeting commuter needs. As the service continues to grow, further investments in infrastructure and services will be necessary to ensure it remains a viable and efficient transport option for all.
