Pimpri Chinchwad: On March 9, concerned citizens of Pimpri-Chinchwad gathered at Krantiveer Chaphekar Chowk, Chinchwad, forming a human chain to spotlight the worsening pollution levels in the Pavana, Mula, and Indrayani rivers. The demonstration aimed to draw attention to pressing environmental and public health issues stemming from contaminated water sources.
Participants voiced concerns about the declining quality of drinking water, particularly highlighting the excessive use of chlorine, which they believe could harm the liver and kidneys. The alarming rise in cancer cases in the region was also a key point of discussion.
Environmental experts and activists emphasized the urgent need for river rejuvenation and called for a detailed review of the proposed Riverfront Development Project, which is projected to cost between ₹2,000-4,000 crore. The potential link between river pollution and the spread of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) was also raised, with participants seeking clarity and accountability from the authorities.
The gathering concluded with a collective appeal to the administration for immediate and effective action to restore the rivers to their natural state. Citizens pledged their commitment to preserving these water bodies for the well-being of future generations.
