Pune: A group of 10 to 12 girls at the government-run girls’ hostel in Katraj Ambegaon have fallen ill after consuming contaminated water. The affected students experienced symptoms including stomach aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, as well as skin irritations and rashes.

This incident has raised serious concerns about the lack of immediate action from the hostel administration, despite repeated complaints regarding the water quality. The hostel, which accommodates around 100 students, is managed under the Social Welfare Commissionerate, part of the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department.

According to reports, a complaint was lodged with the hostel superintendent, Seema Panchal, about the contaminated water supply over the past three days. However, no action was taken, leading to the illness of 10 to 12 girls.

The students have raised concerns about negligence on part of the hostel administration. “Because of this negligence, 10 to 12 girls have been suffering from stomach issues and diarrhea, while others developed skin rashes. It has been mentioned that diarrhea is widespread in Katraj,” one student said.

This incident comes on the heels of another scandal that emerged in November of the previous year. Students from the Government Girls’ Hostel in Khadakwasla and the Government Girls’ Hostel in Talegaon Dabhade were found to have been deprived of milk for breakfast for the past six months due to non-payment of commissions.

The recent incidents have further highlighted concerns regarding the management and oversight of basic welfare facilities in government-run hostels.
