Nagpur: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has issued a stern warning regarding the recent violence in Nagpur, stating that the damages caused during the riots will be recovered from the rioters. If they fail to pay, their properties will be seized and sold. “Such incidents will not be tolerated in Maharashtra, and strict action will be taken to control rioters,” he asserted.

The Chief Minister held a high-level meeting with senior police officials in Nagpur to review the situation. He explained that the incident began when a symbolic grave of Aurangzeb was set on fire in the morning, leading to complaints from certain groups. The police registered a case, but misinformation was spread on social media, claiming that a cloth inscribed with Quranic verses was burned in the process. This misinformation incited a mob, leading to large-scale violence, vandalism, and attacks on people. The police acted swiftly, bringing the riots under control within 4-5 hours using tear gas and other measures.

CM Fadnavis stated that police have begun identifying and arresting rioters based on CCTV footage, mobile recordings, and media coverage. So far, 104 individuals have been identified, and 92 have been arrested, including some minors. The police have adopted a zero-tolerance approach and will take action against anyone involved in the riots or aiding the rioters.

Additionally, authorities are tracking social media posts that incited violence. “Around 68 posts have been identified, and investigations are ongoing to identify more. Those who spread rumors, instigated fear, or posted provocative content will be treated as co-accused alongside the rioters,” the CM warned.

Regarding the curfew imposed in certain areas of Nagpur, Fadnavis acknowledged its impact on daily life and business activities. “Efforts are being made to relax restrictions while ensuring strict police vigilance. Any further attempts at violence will be met with severe action,” he emphasized.
