Pune: Police have pinpointed 2,576 crime-prone areas across the city, with the highest concentrations found in Zone V and Zone III. To tackle rising crime rates, authorities have intensified patrolling efforts through the Cop24 initiative, ensuring each hotspot is monitored five times daily.

The Cop24 initiative, introduced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, aims to enhance law enforcement efficiency and minimize response time. The initiative is centrally supervised by the crime branch, allowing for coordinated deployment of officers. By leveraging technology, real-time monitoring, and data analysis, police can proactively safeguard public spaces, particularly in high-crime zones.

As part of this strategy, law enforcement officials have compiled a database of 30,000 criminals, cataloging residential details, criminal history, and recent offenses. This information is accessible through the MySafe Crime Module app, where patrol officers are required to log updates on suspects’ movements and maintain digital records.

Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar highlighted the effectiveness of combining modern technology with traditional policing, stating that this approach has resulted in a decline in street crimes, homicides, and attempted murders. “Over 2,500 hotspots have been mapped, and a comprehensive database of 30,000 offenders has been created to facilitate swift action,” he added.

To further strengthen crime prevention, police have set a goal to reduce murder-related offenses by over six per cent compared to the previous year. Kumar also confirmed that law enforcement officials have successfully patrolled all identified hotspots five times a day, meeting the initiative’s operational target.

Authorities are now focusing on enhancing patrolling efforts in red-zone areas, where crime rates remain particularly high. The police department is actively developing new strategies to address challenges and further improve safety in these vulnerable
