Pune: The long-standing demand for a high-speed rail service between Pune and Nagpur appears closer to realization, with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently indicating the possibility of introducing a Vande Bharat Express on the busy route. His remarks, made during the inauguration of two new train services, have sparked optimism among regular passengers.
The minister’s comments came at the launch of the Hadapsar–Jodhpur Express and the MGR Chennai Central–Bhagat Ki Kothi Express. During the event, Vaishnaw confirmed that positive discussions had taken place with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis about the potential rollout of a Vande Bharat Express connecting Pune and Nagpur.
Currently, the journey between Pune and Nagpur takes around 14 to 16 hours, causing discomfort for travelers. The introduction of a faster, more efficient option like the Vande Bharat Express is expected to significantly cut down travel time and enhance passenger comfort. This new service could offer much-needed relief, especially for those who struggle to get confirmed tickets and often have to rely on general compartments or costly and exhausting bus travel.
Passenger groups and public representatives have long advocated for the Vande Bharat service on this route. While local railway authorities have supported the proposal, the final decision lies with the central government. Minister Vaishnaw’s acknowledgment of the discussions with the state leadership signals that the demand is finally being considered at the highest level.
Despite the minister’s statement, officials from Central Railway have clarified that they have not yet received formal communication about the train. “A proposal for a sleeper Vande Bharat service was submitted to Mumbai headquarters last year, but we have not heard back,” said a senior official.
If the new service is approved, it would become the fourth Vande Bharat Express originating from Nagpur, which already connects to Bilaspur, Ujjain-Indore, and Secunderabad. Adding Pune to the list would further cement Nagpur’s growing importance in India’s high-speed rail network.
As discussions progress, passengers from both Pune and Nagpur are keenly awaiting an official announcement, hopeful that the modern rail service will be launched soon.
