Pune: While traffic violations by two-wheeler riders in Pune are often under the spotlight, public transport drivers are increasingly becoming part of the problem. A recent incident involving a Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) bus driver has triggered widespread criticism after a photo surfaced showing him using a mobile phone while operating the vehicle.

The image, posted by a Reddit user, quickly gained traction online, with users expressing alarm over the growing trend of distracted driving in the city. The post prompted strong reactions, many calling out the lack of accountability among public transport drivers, who are expected to set an example for safe driving.

“This is dangerously common here,” one user wrote, sharing their own experience. “I’ve been in cabs where the drivers scroll endlessly through reels, switch between Facebook, Instagram, even put on a movie. It’s beyond reckless.”

Another user commented on the broader issue, saying, “It’s a new low. Whether it’s cab or auto drivers, you’ll find them watching reels or shorts even in slow-moving traffic or at red lights. It’s shocking how normalized this behavior has become. People must be extra cautious—especially while crossing roads with children.”

Drawing comparisons, a user from Bengaluru noted that stricter protocols exist in their city. “Drivers are asked to either leave their phones in depot lockers or switch them off before taking the wheel. Conductors might have some leeway in emergencies, but even they aren’t allowed to use phones while on duty.”
This latest incident has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of traffic safety regulations, especially for public transport operators, whose negligence can put dozens of lives at risk. Many citizens are urging PMPML and traffic authorities to take serious action and implement preventive measures to curb such irresponsible behavior.
