Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) water supply department continues to implement water cuts in the southern parts of the city, despite adequate reservoir storage levels.
Although the civic body initially announced a water cut, the decision was later withdrawn after backlash from residents. However, many areas in South Pune still face irregular water supply, with residents receiving water every alternate day. Officials attribute this to limited pipeline capacity.
Currently, the Vadgaon water centre provides 16 MLD of water daily to areas including Katraj, Kondhwa, Sinhagad, Dhankawadi, Yewalewadi, and parts of Bibwewadi. Authorities state that due to the growing population, the alternate-day water supply is necessary to ensure fair distribution across these areas.
PMC officials explained, “Water pressure issues and the limited pipeline network have made daily distribution unfeasible under current circumstances.”
As part of Pune’s equal water distribution initiative, 12 storage tanks were planned for South Pune, but only two are operational at present. The lack of functional infrastructure and inadequate pipeline capacity are adding to the difficulties faced by residents.
The civic body’s plans include the construction of 65 storage tanks citywide, with 11–12 earmarked for South Pune. While some of these tanks have been completed, others remain delayed due to land acquisition issues.
