Pune: In a move to improve traffic control and emergency response in the city, Pune City Police have installed 125 Internet Protocol (IP) speakers at major intersections and busy roads. These advanced audio devices are linked to a central command center and function in coordination with the city’s CCTV surveillance network.
The smart speakers will be used to broadcast real-time announcements about traffic jams, waterlogging, accidents, tree falls, and other urgent events. They will also be helpful in managing crowd movement during religious festivals, processions, and other large gatherings.
Authorities plan to expand the speaker network to 500 units over the next few years, covering the rest of the city in a phased manner. The current phase has already targeted high-traffic zones and major junctions.
These IP speakers serve two key roles: delivering public announcements and enabling two-way communication with officers in the field. This real-time interaction will help police issue immediate instructions and manage public safety more effectively.
The system will be particularly valuable during large-scale events like Ashadhi Wari, Ganesh festival, and New Year celebrations. It will also support smoother passage for emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire brigades, and VIP convoys.
Integrated directly with the city’s traffic control hub, the speaker network is expected to help reduce congestion and speed up emergency responses.
