Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is moving closer to establishing a dedicated dog park in Kharadi, marking a significant step toward addressing the rising cases of human-canine conflict across the city. The initiative, originally proposed in March 2023, has gained fresh momentum with the identification of a potential location.

While the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) inaugurated its first dog park in January this year, PMC has faced several setbacks in launching a similar facility. Earlier attempts faltered due to legal and logistical roadblocks. An initial proposal to set up the park near Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Katraj had to be scrapped after the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) objected, citing restrictions on allowing domestic animals near zoo premises. Another site, earmarked in Aundh, was eventually diverted to a different civic project.

Now, PMC is focusing on areas like Kharadi, where the pet population is notably high. Officials believe that situating the park in such a locality will ensure greater utility and engagement among pet owners. The park is expected to offer several amenities, including walking trails and play zones, which will be open to the public at no cost. However, premium features like a swimming pool for dogs may involve a nominal fee.

To ensure safety and hygiene, all dogs entering the park must be vaccinated, de-wormed, and kept on a leash while within the premises.
