Pune: A case has been registered nearly three years after the tragic death of a two-and-a-half-year-old girl who drowned in an open pit at Bindra Industries in Nighoje village. The incident, which occurred on July 17, 2022, had gone without formal legal action until now.
The deceased child has been identified as Tapasi Sonu Sirswal, daughter of a watchman working at the industrial site. According to police sources, on the afternoon of July 17, Tapasi was playing near a pit dug for a lift shaft that had been left uncovered. She accidentally fell into the water-filled excavation and drowned.
Despite the seriousness of the incident, no case was registered at the time. It wasn’t until Thursday, June 5, 2025, that Assistant Police Inspector Rakesh Uddesing Gumane (age 40) filed a formal complaint at the Mahalunge MIDC Police Station.
The accused has been identified as Vishal Sonawane, whose full details are still under verification. He is alleged to have neglected safety protocols by failing to secure the hazardous site, leading to the child’s untimely death.
Mahalunge MIDC Police have confirmed that a case has been officially filed and further investigation is underway to establish accountability and the extent of negligence involved.
