Pune: Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Pune’s guardian minister, Ajit Pawar, has reassured citizens that the COVID-19 situation in the district remains under control, urging the public not to panic. Speaking to the media on Saturday after a review meeting with local officials, Pawar addressed the recent uptick in cases, emphasizing that appropriate measures are being taken.
According to data released by the state health department, Maharashtra recorded 102 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, with 31 reported from Pune district. Pawar confirmed that while a few cases have emerged in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, the situation is being closely monitored by the health minister and administration.
“There is no cause for alarm,” he said. “However, elderly citizens should remain cautious and avoid crowded areas to reduce risk.”
In preparation for the annual Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage to Pandharpur, which traditionally sees a large influx of devotees, Pawar also reviewed infrastructure arrangements. The Sant Tukaram Maharaj ‘palkhi’ is scheduled to depart from Dehu on June 18, followed by the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj ‘palkhi’ leaving from Alandi on the evening of June 19.
The state government has sanctioned funds to support the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage this year, anticipating a rise in the number of participants. Ongoing work at Dive Ghat aims to improve walking conditions for the ‘warkaris’ (pilgrims), and Pawar has instructed authorities to remove any hoardings and advertisements along the pilgrimage route to ensure a safe and unobstructed journey.
The assurance comes as a relief to residents and devotees alike, with the government promising both public health safety and successful execution of the religious event.
